YALI – COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT ACTION PLAN NAME of Program: GREEN SCHOOLS PROGRAM NAME OF Project: Fruits & Shades for Schools Project (FSS) Program purpose & importance of undertaking it: There are many primary and secondary schools in Awutu Senya East and Madina Municipalities. Many lack good compounds suitable for studying i.e. lack shade trees. Residential and commercial activities have taking over all the vegetation cover in these municipalities an these has led to massive deforestation. Pupils lack access to nutritional values derived from especially fruits which they sometimes only taste when at home during their holidays. From a study by UNICEF Ghana in 2014 indicated that, too many children in Ghana suffer from health issues stemming from malnutrition which is an underlying cause of one third of all child deaths. Preamble/introduction GREEN Awards Ghana was established and incorporated in 2014 as a social enterprise (NGO) to increase efforts in mitigating the impacts of climate change on living creatures by promoting sustainable environmental management as a discipline and a management practice. It is recognized by the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Environmental Protection Agency, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and UNEP. After its incorporation, it has conducted a desk top research to access the economic and social impact of climate change effect on both living and non-living creatures. It has also embarked on educational campaigns in schools while establishing clubs in schools to increase efforts in awareness creation. GREEN AWARDS GHANA PROJECT

Executive Summary Ghana’s natural resource capital (environment) and ecosystems provides support to human livelihoods and economic factors. Natural resources such as; soil, water, minerals, forest, wildlife etc) are essential for productive sectors of Ghana’s economy. The environment performs, at no cost, several regulating functions such as soil protection, pest control, forest production, water purification etc. However, the functioning of these productive and regulating functions depends upon proper environment management. Failing to do so, capital resources will have to be used to compensate for the loss of environmental functions. A poorly managed environment will cause pollution of soils, water and air which affects human health.
